Cotton lint production is expected to reach 73,000 MT in the 2017/18 agricultural season due to the government’s free inputs support scheme targeting smallholder communal farmers. The climatic conditions in Zimbabwe comprising high temperatures, low humidity, frost-free environment are most suitable for growing cotton. These combined with the use of non-genetically modified seed makes Zimbabwe competitive in growing the crop. There is limited value addition in the industry with spinning capacity of less than 20% of total lint available. Cotton lint exports are expected to reach 60,000 MT as domestic consumption of lint by spinners is low leaving the bulk of lint for export. Opportunities for investment in the cotton value chain therefore exist to add value to cotton lint currently being exported. A technical and financing partner is being sought for up-scaling of spinning and establishment of weaving and finishing at our Norton factory.
